Third Anti-Rape Culture Event and Coalition Meeting: 3/5 at Freedom Hall! (INVITE OTHERS AND SPREAD THE WORD)

On January 29th, 2013, Feminist Resistance held an initial discussion and meeting with a number of other groups and individuals to organize a future event against rape culture. At the discussion, we spoke about the definition and manifestations of rape culture, how to address rape culture with intersectional feminism, and the politics behind liberation from rape culture. We met again on February 19, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. to continue our conversations and to get to know each other better politically and personally. 

This is the beginning of a potential new coalition around this issue and this is the beginning of process of political discussions about rape culture. 

Possible topics of conversation on the agenda: the media and its connections to rape culture, reproductive justice and access and rape culture, colonialism and imperialism and indigenous resistance and rape culture, military culture and the military industrial complex and rape culture. 

All are welcome to attend. Please spread the word to those you think would be interested in joining this political conversation about rape culture.

SECOND ANTI-RAPE CULTURE EVENT: FEBRUARY 19, 2013 AT 7:00 P.M.

Feminist Resistance is part of a new coalition organizing around a future anti-rape culture event in the future. This coalition, before we even get to the logistics of the event, is engaging in political and ideological conversations about what rape culture, how we can liberate everyone from rape culture, and the manifestations of rape culture. We are having an open second meeting this Tuesday, February 19th, at 7:00 p.m. at Freedom Hall. Anti-Rape Culture Event: First Meeting 1/29/13, Freedom Hall (SPREAD THE WORD)

We are trying to put on a big anti-rape culture event with lots of other groups in the future. At this first meeting, we want to talk politics: What is rape culture? What are its effects? We are Feminist Resistance, a newly-formed activist and grassroots coalition fighting to smash all forms of gender-based oppression in New York City. Our coalition was one of the groups that grew out of the organizing for the SlutWalk held in NYC in October 2011.

Feminist Resistance is hoping to work in collaboration with a number of other groups to organize a future event, march, and protest against rape culture. We are in the very beginning stages of the process. We want to make this event become a part of cross- and multi-coalition movement and we would love to work with you and your organization. We would like you invite you and your organization to join the initial organizing meeting on Tuesday, January 29th, 7pm, at Freedom Hall so we can start to build such a movement. 

At this meeting, we want to determine what fighting rape culture means to all involved, how we all envision the nature and character of the event, and what liberation from rape culture means for all of us. Before we begin to plan any logistics, we want to start creating a political vision for the event with your group. 

Feminist Resistance, as we ourselves organize, strive for a kind of feminist activism which centers the voices and experiences of those who are too often silenced and marginalized. Our fight against rape culture must do exactly the same. This movement must be by and for those who are the most silenced and marginalized by rape culture.

ORGANIZING MEETING POSTPONED UNTIL OCTOBER 2ND!

Hi, everyone! We’re not going to be having our usual fourth-Tuesday-of-the month-organizing meeting tonight. We have postponed it until next week, October 2nd. It will be at 7-9 p.m. at Freedom Hall (113 West 128th in Harlem), the location we have now officially moved to for our meetings. On October 2nd, we will be primarily discussing the political goals of our future anti-rape culture event. Please join the conversation. We hope to see you all soon!

ORGANIZING MEETING THIS TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 11TH, FROM 7-9 P.M. AT FREEDOM HALL

We’re having an organizing meeting this Tuesday, September 11th, from 7-9 p.m. at Freedom Hall (see more info on the meeting location below). 

We’re going to be discussing:

  • How can we concretely combat the prison-industrial complex and how we can help prisoners while they are incarcerated 
  • Our upcoming educational on transmisogyny
  • Our upcoming collaboration with other feminist and activist groups for an anti-rape culture march
  • “Sex-positivity” and its implications. How may can that term be oppressive and limiting?

…feminism, activism, and disability, facilitated by Feminist Resistance member, Annabel Zaharieff, entitled MAKING ACTIVISM ACCESSIBLE: FEMINISM, ACTIVISM, AND DISABILITY. 

Members of Feminist Resistance have been familiarizing themselves with resources on disability and feminism (many of which we have posted on facebook and here on tumblr in the weeks leading up to the discussion) and we encourage all who join us to share their own resources at the meeting. 

Possible topics of discussion will include (i.e. these are the type of resources Feminist Resistance have been reading and sharing), but will not be limited to: invisible vs. visible disabilities, mental health vs. mental illness, what is ableism and how does it manifest itself in schools, jobs, society, and the government?; ableist language; government assistance for the disabled, connections between disability and rape culture, the desexualization of disabled persons, radical mental health, and models of disability.
